Long Biography

Jake s. Jordan is a current DM student in music composition at Florida State University, studying stage music ranging from modern opera to Broadway musicals. His works range from his award-winning concert band ACCBDA commission The Last of Sailing Ships to larger stage works like Sella the Musical. He has previous experience writing for film and animation through several film schools as well as writing for the stage in Columbus, Ohio.

During his time at Ohio State, Jake studied education with David Hedgecoth, traveling with him to Salvador and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to experience Brazilian musical culture through the Instituto Clara Ramos (ICR) Brasil. Through ICR, Jake had his American Vignettes performed throughout the country, in several collaborative concerts with the Escola de Música da UFRJ, the Escola de Música da Universidade Federal da Bahia, and NEOJIBA. Jake later went on to student teach within Columbus City Schools' International Academy and Dominion Middle School. 

In current collaboration with other creative artists, Jake is working on a production of this most current opera, On the Ethics of Broadway, a political comedy exploring the hypothetical of the result of heavy censorship of Broadway performances. Bringing together dance, musical theater, opera, music theory, education, administration, visual art, and production, the OtEoB project hopes to integrate all expressions of art while providing organic opportunities for students to interact with early professionals. 

 

Jake currently teaches Sight Singing & Ear Training and Music Theory, as well as guest taught Fundamentals and Songwriting, at Florida State University. He has also led the Society of Composers, Inc. at Florida State, where he directed weekly meetings as well as worked with faculty to bring guest composers and professionals to present to students. His previous degrees include a Master of Music from Florida State University and a Bachelor of Music Education from The Ohio State University.
